State of wedded bliss
The Bride & The Grooms engages audiences
and rings up high grosses in Ohio,
so here's an interesting proposal for Hollywood
AKRON, Ohio -- The Bride & The Grooms, a shoestring-budgeted independent romantic comedy movie, premiered to impressive numbers in Ohio over the weekend.
In two theaters -- the Highland Theatre in Akron and the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights -- the movie averaged $1,862 in box office grosses, which is higher than 12 of the 20 top-grossing movies averaged around the country April 24-26, according to figures compiled by boxofficemojo.com.
"We had a low-five-figures budget for the entire movie, undiscovered actors and no money for advertising, yet here we are, pulling in numbers like that," said Butch Maier, who wrote, directed and produced the movie. "Numbers that, in our state at least, are comparable to or better than movies that cost tens of millions of dollars to make. Just think how successful a Hollywood remake of our movie could be with even a million-dollar budget."
The Bride & The Grooms is about a woman who proposes to her boyfriend and then accidentally gets engaged to three other men at the same time. Jacilyn Ledford stars as a bride-to-be who is too nice for her own good. Shaphan David Seiders, Michael Wendt, Christopher Leabu and Oliver Gray portray potential grooms jockeying for position at the altar.
The movie, which opened in 15 theaters in 12 states overall, also grossed nearly $900 in one West Virginia theater -- Park Place Stadium Cinemas in Charleston. Maier grew up in Charleston and originally wrote the script for high school acquaintance Jennifer Garner, the Golden Globe-winning star of the television show Alias.
